1. How do I set it up?

On your iPhone:

  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi network your other devices use.
  2. Connect your VPN app.
  3. If your VPN has a kill switch, turn on its option to allow local network (LAN) connections. For example, in Proton VPN go to Settings → Allow LAN connections. Without this, the VPN may block your other devices from reaching the iPhone.
  4. Open VPN Share and tap Start sharing. If iOS asks for Local Network access, tap Allow.
  5. Keep VPN Share open on screen while you share. The screen stays on, so keep the phone charging.

On each other device: enter the Automatic URL, or the Manual server and port, shown in VPN Share. See where to set the proxy below.

2. Where do I set the proxy on each device?

Set it for the Wi-Fi network that your iPhone is on. Menu names can vary a little between system versions and, on Android, between manufacturers.

Device Automatic (URL) Manual (server and port)
iPhone or iPad Settings → Wi-Fi → ⓘ next to the network → Configure Proxy → Automatic, then enter the URL Same place → Manual, then enter the server and port
Mac System Settings → Wi-Fi → Details… next to the network → Proxies → Automatic proxy configuration, then enter the URL Same place → turn on Web proxy (HTTP) and Secure web proxy (HTTPS), and enter the server and port for both
Windows Settings → Network & internet → Proxy → Use setup script, then enter the URL as the Script address Same page → Manual proxy setup, then enter the server and port
Android Settings → Wi-Fi → long-press the network → Modify → Advanced → Proxy: Proxy Auto-Config, then enter the PAC URL Same place → Proxy: Manual, then enter the server (hostname) and port

3. Automatic or Manual: which should I choose?

Question Automatic Manual
What you enter A URL, such as http://192.168.1.25:8080/proxy.pac A server, such as 192.168.1.25, and a port, such as 8080
When sharing stops The device goes back to its normal connection on its own, without telling you The device loses internet on that Wi-Fi until sharing restarts or you turn the proxy off
Best for Everyday use: set it once and leave it on When you need to be sure the device's traffic always goes through the iPhone

In Automatic mode, the switch back to your normal connection is silent. If it matters that traffic goes through your iPhone's VPN, check it before you start. In Manual mode, remember to turn the proxy off on the device when you stop using VPN Share.

4. How do I check it works?

On the other device, open whatismyip.com. It should show your VPN's IP address, the same one VPN Share shows as the exit IP. If it shows your home or office connection's IP instead, the device isn't using the proxy.

5. After I restart sharing, devices take a few minutes to use it again

When a browser can't reach a proxy, it marks it as unavailable for a while and connects directly instead. It also keeps reusing the direct connections it opened in the meantime. How long this lasts depends on the browser:

  • Chrome, Edge and Brave: about 5 minutes
  • Firefox: about 30 minutes
  • Safari: a few minutes

To make the browser use the proxy again straight away:

Browser What to do
Chrome, Edge, Brave Open chrome://net-internals/#proxy and click Clear bad proxies. Then open chrome://net-internals/#sockets and click Flush socket pools. Or quit and reopen the browser.
Firefox Quit and reopen Firefox. To make it try the proxy again sooner in future, open about:config and set network.proxy.failover_timeout to 30 (seconds).
Safari Quit and reopen Safari.

Tip: if you want to change VPN servers, leave sharing on and switch servers in your VPN app, rather than stopping and restarting sharing.

6. My devices can't connect

Check each of these:

  • Same Wi-Fi. The device and the iPhone must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Your VPN's local network option. If your VPN has a kill switch, make sure its "Allow LAN connections" or local network option is on.
  • Local Network permission. On the iPhone, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and make sure VPN Share is turned on.
  • The right address. The iPhone's IP address can change. Compare the URL or server shown in VPN Share with what you entered on the device. To keep the address fixed, set a DHCP reservation for the iPhone in your router, and turn off Private Wi-Fi Address for that network on the iPhone (Settings → Wi-Fi → ⓘ).
  • The app is open. VPN Share must stay open on screen while sharing.

7. A website or app still sees my real IP

Only web traffic goes through the proxy. In browsers, WebRTC (used for calls and video chat) can bypass it and reveal your real IP. To stop this:

  • Chrome: install Google's WebRTC Network Limiter extension and, in its options, choose Use my proxy server (if present).
  • Brave: Settings → Privacy and security → WebRTC IP handling policy → Disable non-proxied UDP.
  • Firefox: open about:config and set media.peerconnection.ice.proxy_only to true.

Then check on ipleak.net. Your real IP shouldn't appear anywhere on the page.

Some apps ignore the system proxy settings, and many smart TVs and games consoles have no proxy setting at all. Their traffic doesn't go through VPN Share.

8. How does the password work?

If you turn on a password in VPN Share → Settings, devices ask for a username and password the first time they use the proxy. Enter the username and password you set in VPN Share → Settings. Browsers usually ask once.

Some apps don't support proxy passwords, so they can't connect while the password is on.

9. Does VPN Share include a VPN?

No. VPN Share is not a VPN and doesn't provide VPN servers. It shares your iPhone's connection with your other devices. To share a VPN, use any VPN app on the iPhone.
